Ed OCasey I was introduced to Huntsmen by American Scrap, which is one of my favorite albums of 2018. Going back here to experience their genesis only cements my opinion that they are a true force to be reckoned with in modern rock/metal. The mix of Americana, rock, and metal influences are readily on display here. And because this material is older, there's a rawness to the music that reminds me of watching garage bands perfect their craft. Astounding! Favorite track: Phoenix.

Hayduke X Early work by the band who will likely end 2018 with the AOTY. Even here, you can hear the foundation of what they are now. Hunt For Food, Not Sport is excellent and Black Birds, Grey Sky is exceptional. Favorite track: Black Birds, Grey Sky.

Chicago Doom Confederacy This EP is a great cut of post-rock that blends crushing riffs with skillfully woven melodies and motifs. I highly recommend seeing them live, but if you can't, this shall suffice. Favorite track: Hunt For Food, Not Sport.

I remember when I was younger, my daddy taught me hunt for food not sport. Now I’m older, his words stick with me in the desert, where I am hungry. Modern living has left me starving. Beneath the buildings, I started laughing. I started walking. The sun was smiling. Now it’s scowling, the wind is howling. The hills are my home, the fire my wife. My story the miles, the kill is my life. The hills are my home, the fire my wife. The dirt is in my blood, my will is the knife. It’s enough to make a sane man go mad.

Phoenix 06:08
It took you far from home. Too hard, too calloused. A promise made of stone, softly spoken. No way you could’ve known, you were too young then. But now that you are grown, regret too often. Ambition always shadows your days, smile betrayed by the lines on your face. A laceration much too deep to heal. A separation much too wide to seal.

Black birds on a grey sky. This is my Dallas sunrise. It’s too cold for this time of year. I could complain, no one would hear. LBJ for miles in decay. Westbound for the golden state. For the ashes of a girl I loved, after Earth ends ashes are enough. She took my love and ran. I’ll pry it out of her dead hands.

about

Huntsmen Chicago, Illinois

Whilst storytelling has been - and remains - at the core of all that HUNTSMEN is, they continue to dissolve the boundaries between metal and the more traditional modes of folk and country. Mandala of Fear marries melody and progressive elements to create an undulating foundation to layer its dystopian missive on atop.

'Mandala of Fear' is available now.
